The freedom of lane splitting
Not too long ago, I wrote an article suggesting that motorcyclists in the United Kingdom and the rest of the European Union are generally more skilled than their American counterparts. The reason behind this, I suggested, was the intense amount of testing that comes as a result of the EU’s tiered licensing. In doing so,…

“… a belief (perhaps fear is a better word) that if lane splitting is decriminalized across the United States it will somehow become obligatory.”
As a new rider in Florida (one 15-minute ride), that's sort of how I feel about lane-splitting. I know it has a lot of benefits and I would totally vote for it to be legal if offered a vote, but the thought of squeezing in between moving vehicles makes me feel uneasy.
By the way, I intended to post the following a year or so ago (when I discovered your blog), but I was too busy/lazy to sign in to post a comment:
Your posts from before you had a motorcycle were inspirational to me. I lived with this abnormal need/desire to ride a motorcycle since 2011. I finally bought a motorcycle in January at 30 years old.
Keep up the good work.

The problem with lane splitting is that if you allow it motorcycles will have every advantage in congestion and car drivers will lose their shit as we get an unfair advantage. Maybe. Who knows? Why car drivers care if we get squashed splitting is beyond me as they try to run us down every other which way.
I have lived in lane splitting/filtering jurisdictions and I do it when I want to, but I have never been a slave to social pressure. -
I lane split like a motherpucker and I never have a problem. The only problem is when I get outside of California and remember I'm not allowed to lane split. (Phoenix traffic sucks, by the way.) Anywho, there are plenty of times I make the choice in CA to wait on the splitting, even when other bikes are going by.
As far as car drivers getting angry, let's think this through. Your driving your car and you hear a motorcycle coming by. You're so angry you become willing to harm another human being, perhaps face prison time, and as minimum, damage your own property just to keep someone else from getting home before you do. Not realistic. Every now and then I have a car ease over to stop me. And every now and then those same cars get some filthy words as I pass or maybe some spit on their windshield. (Modular Helmets Rule!)
Alls I'm sayin' is that it would really lighten the amount of vehicles on the roads and shorten traffic times if motorcycles could split in every state.
Smooches,
Sash The Rude Biker Chick
